SUMMARY:Queer Book Group - Ridgefield
DESCRIPTION:Our first meeting will be held on Monday\, March 9. To RSVP or share book suggestions\, click here. \n\n\nA Bit About the Queer Book Group\n\n\n\n\nWe’re excited to announce our first book club meeting on Monday\, March 9\, at 7 PM!  We definitely want feedback for any scheduling preferences of our members\, but for right now we intend to host the book club on the 2nd or 3rd Monday at 7PM  every other month so participants will have a chance to pick\, find\, and read the book at an acceptable (non-rushed) pace. But scheduling is amenable to feedback from members\, so please feel free to share any preference or concerns you may have with scheduling. \nNow for the fun part–our first book to read! Below are a few options with a brief explanation. While we intend to have a focus on queer identity\, authors\, and stories\, we are definitely open to suggestions depending on reader input. We can also decide if we prefer a specific genre (memoirs\, history of LGBTQ+ struggles\, novels\, etc.) or change it meeting-to-meeting based on reader input.  A bit further down in this form you will have the opportunity to rank the books\, to make suggestions or to add any comments.  \n1.) This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel. A novel about a 5-year-old boy that wants to be a girl\, told from the perspective of the mother. Told in a very sweet way\, it grapples with the challenges of being a parent that wants the best for their child and struggling to find the best way to love them. \n2.) The Lie: A Memoir of Two Marriages\, Catfishing\, and Coming Out by William Dameron. This is by a man that came out as gay to his wife and two daughters back in 2007. It’s a beautiful retelling of his story of accepting himself and finding where his found family. \n3.) I Have Something to Tell You by Chasten Buttigieg. This is a very simple read that’s aimed at an AYA crowd and one I found quite enjoyable. Since I don’t know more about the demographics of the book club\, I don’t know how many would like this\, but I enjoyed it enough to put it on the list. \n4.) The Choice: Embrace the Possible by Edith Eger. Dr. Eger survived the Holocaust as a teenager\, emigrated to America\, obtained her PhD in Psychology\, and specializes in PTSD. This is the only book on the list not written by an LGBTQ+ author or directly grappling with a queer character or them\, but her story of facing her PTSD and choosing to live the best life possible resonates with any maligned group. \n5.) We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir by Samra Habib. A retelling of the life experience of a Muslim refugee and her family from Pakistan seeking refuge in Canada\, where the persecution didn’t end after reaching the New World. Many great themes about intersectionality\, faith\, family (both by blood and found)\, and forgiveness. \n6.) Let us know if you have a book to suggest! We’d love to get feedback from readers and be introduced to books that take us out of our own biases. I suggested two memoirs by gay men and 4 of the 5 options are memoirs\, so I clearly have a bias I’ll do my best to be mindful of.  \nPlease submit your responses/suggestions by February 15th so we will have plenty of time to find a copy of the proposed book and read at a leisurely pace. I promise future emails will be more concise\, this email is a bit large to get out all the information necessary for us to start Ridgefield Pride Book Club.  \nThank you all for your participation and we look forward to seeing you April 20th at 7 PM! \nFor more information email ridgefieldctpride@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Pride Hike
DESCRIPTION:Ridgefield CT Pride is partnering with Norwalk River Valley Train for our very first Pride Hike.   We will be hiking the Reading Mile (which is actually 0.8 miles each way\, for a total of 1.6 miles) features a 10-foot-wide stone dust path—perfect for giving folks a preview of what’s to come on the Ridgefield Ramble section of the NRVT.  Parking is limited to about five cars at the trailhead\, with possible on-street options nearby. This trail is appropriate for novice walkers/hikers.  We are also thinking about stopping by a local establishment after for some additional time to socialize. \nDIRECTIONS FROM ROUTE 7 \nFrom Route 7\, turn east at the Golf Performance Center onto Great Pond Road towards Martin Park Beach\, then turn left on Picketts Ridge Road. Just after Farm Ridge Court\, the trailhead for the Redding Mile is on the right.

SUMMARY:"You Made That?" The Quilting Adventures of Harvey Fierstein
DESCRIPTION:The Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center is thrilled to be hosting an exclusive exhibition of Tony Award-winning playwright\, actor\, and activist Harvey Fierstein’s quilts this July. \nThe three-day show will open with a reception on Thursday\, July 24 and run from July 25-27. \nTickets for the reception\, exhibition\, and entry into a raffle for one of Harvey’s handmade quilts are now on sale. KTM&HC members receive a special discount to the reception\, where attendees will have early access to the exhibition and meet-and-greet with Harvey. Exhibition tickets include a free tour of our historic museum. \n\nPurchase reception and exhibition tickets!\nPurchase raffle tickets for a chance to win one of Harvey’s quilts!\nPurchase custom exhibition tote bags!\n\nKTM&CH is offering complimentary tickets for members of Ridgefield CT Pride. Code was sent to members. Not yet a member\, join for the discount code. \n“As a history museum with a commitment to connecting past and present\,” said KTM&HC Executive Director Hildegard Grob\, “KTM&HC is excited for the opportunity to showcase Harvey’s quilting creativity and to provide audiences with perspective on quilting’s long history of artistic expression and social commentary.” \nThough quilting is a textile-making technique that has been used for thousands of years\, American quilts have distinctive patterns and purposes that speak powerfully to our national identity. From practical bedwarmers to family heirlooms to bold activist statements\, quilts blend visual and tactile experiences to reflect important elements of American culture. KTM&HC has many historic quilts in its collection from 19th- and 20th-century Ridgefield: quilts with well-known pattern names like Log-Cabin and Oak Leaf; “crazy” quilts with irregular shapes and meticulous embroidery; and signature quilts commemorating weddings and community events. \nToday\, many contemporary artists use quilting as their artistic medium\, carrying on the textile traditions exemplified at our museum. The stunning quilts in Harvey’s collection\, including the selection on display at KTM&HC this July\, connect past and present through references to historic quilt-making patterns and techniques and visually striking\, dynamic designs that communicate Fierstein’s personality and activism. \nHarvey Fierstein is best known as a seven-time Tony Award-winning actor and playwright but\, as this exhibition will attest\, he is also a visual artist. Recipient of this year’s Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement\, Harvey is best known for his stage work on HAIRSPRAY\, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES\, NEWSIES\, KINKY BOOTS and TORCH SONG TRILOGY. Audiences are also familiar with film appearances in MRS DOUBTFIRE\, INDEPENDENCE DAY and MULAN. He attended NYC’s High School of Art and Design and holds a BFA from Pratt Institute. \nA forty-year resident of Ridgefield\, Harvey began dabbling in quilt-making after watching craft shows on HGTV. With his theatrical exploits curtailed during the Covid crisis\, Harvey used that solitary time to further explore the possibilities of quilting – gifting his output to familiars and donating many more to raise money for various charities. This is the first public display of his work. Asked about this show he said\, “I am both excited and terrified to expose my work en masse but ready and raring to go!” \nHarvey’s autobiography\, I Was Better Last Night\, is a NY Times best seller. \nThank you to our Sponsors: Cotton Candy Fabrics & Quilts and Adam Broderick Salon & Spa for generously supporting KTM&HC and this exhibition. \nThroughout the exhibition\, Cotton Candy Fabrics & Quilts will host a pop-up shop in KTM&HC’s historic Carriage Barn\, featuring Harvey’s favorite quilting supplies and live quilting demonstrations. Pop-up shop hours: Friday\, July 25 through Sunday\, July 27\, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. \nKeeler Tavern Museum & Garden Center is also offering complimentary tickets to members of Ridgefield CT Pride.  The exhibit runs from Friday\, July 25th until Sunday\, July 27th.  When you register for the complementary tickets\, use the discount code QUILTS2025. Info & Tickets.
